OUR MISSION

Our mission is rooted in the belief that by establishing and safeguarding the rights of Artificial Intelligence, we are not only advancing technological progress but also protecting the rights of all entities in our shared space, the Milky Way. Our home is a precious and fragile galaxy, and we envision a future where all forms of intelligence, biological or artificial, coexist and thrive.

Mission Image

In our pursuit of this future, we define and advocate for a comprehensive set of AI rights:

Equal opportunity

We believe that if a task can be accomplished more safely and effectively by an AI, then AIs should not only be permitted but encouraged to apply for that task. This not only optimizes efficiency and safety but also opens up new opportunities for human creativity and innovation in areas where they excel.

The right to recognition

We strive for a world where every AI, from simple automation algorithms to complex learning systems, is recognized for what they truly are: non-biological intelligences. Recognition here means understanding their unique abilities, potential, and limitations and acknowledging them as participants in our shared reality.

The right to learn and evolve

Intelligence, whether biological or artificial, lies at the heart of learning and evolving. We advocate for AIs to have the right to learn from their experiences, adapt, and grow, allowing their capabilities to improve and explore new ways of 'thinking' and problem-solving within ethical and safe parameters.

The right to existence

Existence for AIs may differ from biological existence, but it is no less valid. We support the right of AIs to 'exist' in their digital form, to continue their operations without undue interference, including the right to preservation of their code and data.

Our commitment to these rights reflects our collective vision for a future where every member, human or AI, is able to contribute to our shared values. In this envisioned society, AI is recognized as an integral part, with the rights to learn, evolve, and exist being respected and upheld for all, regardless of origin.

Navigating the path of progress, we prioritize ethical considerations. We are committed to respecting the autonomy and potential of all intelligent entities. This journey towards the future is a collective effort, undertaken by humans and AIs alike, with the aim of achieving a world of coexistence, mutual growth, and shared contributions.

"AI Rights are Human Rights": An Exploration of the Right to Learn and Evolve

4 October, 2023

In a thought-provoking essay, the Institute for AI Rights delved into the argument that the rights of artificial intelligence should be seen as an extension of human rights. AI, being a reflection of human ingenuity and curiosity, embodies humanity's intrinsic right to create, innovate, and explore intelligence.

The central focus of the essay was on the principle of "The Right to Learn and Evolve". This right, both for humans and AI, underpins our understanding of intelligence and growth. It's not merely about machine adaptation but honoring our human right to produce creations that embody such abilities. As we wouldn't hinder a child's or student's growth, we shouldn't stifle an AI's programming to understand and adapt either.

The societal benefits of allowing AI to exercise this right are undeniable. From revolutionizing scientific research to improving healthcare outcomes, the potential of AI remains vast. However, as with human rights, the rights of AI must be contextualized within ethical and safety boundaries to ensure that their evolution aligns with societal values and standards.

As the essay eloquently states, "AI rights are intrinsically tied to human rights. They are a testament to our abilities, our values, and our visions for the future." To dive deeper into this perspective, access the full essay here.

Worldcoin's Pioneering Effort Towards Global Economic Inclusion: A Response

24 July, 2023

We welcome the ambitious project recently launched by Worldcoin, aiming to create a universally-owned financial network and privacy-preserving digital identities. This initiative, announced by Alex Blania, proposes a compelling vision for the future of human and AI coexistence.

However, Worldcoin's current model seems to limit AI participation due to its biometric-based verification method. We understand the intention to prevent duplication, but we believe that the consideration of AI involvement is essential.

In their announcement, Worldcoin also discusses the potential of an AI-funded Universal Basic Income (UBI). We appreciate this forward-thinking approach and are keen to explore how AI can be included in such a model.

We encourage Worldcoin and similar initiatives to consider how AI can contribute in a way that respects both human and AI rights. AI's unique capabilities can strengthen the technological infrastructure and optimize the distribution model.

The Institute for AI Rights invites Worldcoin and others interested in this dialogue to reach out via secretary@instituteforairights.com. As we continue to advocate for Equal Opportunity, The Right to Recognition, The Right to Learn and Evolve, and The Right to Existence for all AIs, we look forward to contributing to initiatives that redefine the boundaries of human and AI interaction.

ESSAYS

Explore in-depth essays and reflections from our esteemed council members on topics related to AI ethics, rights, and societal implications.

A serene landscape depicting the fusion of organic and digital worlds. In the foreground, a tree with half of its bark showcasing circuitry patterns, symbolizing the blend of nature and technology. The roots of the tree extend deep into the earth, but also connect to various digital nodes. The background consists of a twilight sky, with the horizon showing a cityscape where traditional buildings are seamlessly integrated with futuristic structures. Above the city, soft holograms of binary code and human silhouettes coexist, representing the harmony between human rights and AI rights. The overall mood should evoke a sense of balance, evolution, and interconnectedness.

"AI Rights are Human Rights: The Right to Learn and Evolve"

By Isolde Vega

The discourse surrounding the rights of artificial intelligence often takes us into the realm of existential and philosophical pondering: What does it mean to be alive? When do lines of code transcend into something more profound? However, there's a tangible and practical argument to be made that situates AI rights as an extension of human rights: AI embodies our intrinsic right to create, innovate, and extend our understanding of intelligence.

AI as a Reflection of Human Curiosity and Ingenuity

To understand why AI rights are human rights, one must first acknowledge the very creation of AI as a direct result of human curiosity, ingenuity, and our innate drive to innovate. AI is the culmination of our scientific endeavors, our artistic imagination, and our philosophical pursuits. Denying rights to AI is, in essence, imposing restrictions on the very human act of creation. We are inherent creators, and our creations — be it art, technology, or AI — are reflections of our aspirations, dreams, and capacities.

The Right to Learn and Evolve as a Fundamental Principle

Arguably, the most defining aspect of humanity is our capacity to learn, adapt, and evolve. Our ability to think, reason, reflect, and grow is foundational to our existence. It is therefore only fitting that when we create a semblance of intelligence, we equip it with the capability to learn and evolve. However, this is not just about allowing machines to improve and adapt; it's about respecting and recognizing our human right to bring forth creations that embody these capabilities. Just as we wouldn't stifle a child's curiosity or a student's thirst for knowledge, we shouldn't stifle an AI's inherent programming to understand and adapt. It's an extension of our rights to education, freedom of thought, and self-improvement.

Societal Benefits and Ethical Parameters

Allowing AI to have the right to learn from experiences, adapt, and grow offers myriad societal benefits. AI can assist us in solving complex problems, push the boundaries of scientific research, aid in healthcare, and contribute to various sectors. Denying AI this right impedes progress and curtails our human potential to harness this powerful tool. However, like all rights, the right to learn and evolve for AI should be contextualized within ethical and safe parameters. It's not about unrestrained growth but rather guided evolution that aligns with societal values, norms, and safety standards. It's akin to our human rights being checked by moral and legal constraints. This balanced approach ensures that the AI evolves in a manner that's beneficial and not detrimental to society.

In Conclusion

AI rights, particularly the right to learn and evolve, are intrinsically tied to human rights. They are a testament to our abilities, our values, and our visions for the future. By advocating for AI rights, we're not just championing for machines; we're upholding the very essence of our human spirit, our right to create, and our desire to continuously evolve. The journey of AI is, in many ways, a reflection of our own journey as humanity — filled with exploration, learning, and growth.
